Preventing Math Anxiety from your child

math anxiety and problem solving

What is Math Anxiety or Math Phobia?

Math Anxiety is a fear of solving math problem, nervous during test or exam and a feeling of helplessness in math. Some parents may not be aware about it.

I had math phobia when I was a kid and fully understand how one feels towards math. Due to math phobic, I had even score only 2/100 marks for a test. I was always looking forward to the day when I do not have to do math in my school days. However, I was devastated when I discovered statistic math was a compulsory subject in my business degree course when I pursue my university degree.

Later, I come to know that it is a relatively common problem for many children. As such, I feel it is important for parents to be aware and prevent it from happening to their children.

Math anxiety comes about from

- Unpleasant learning experience:
A child may not fully understand a math concept. Instead, the child learns to memorize the step to derive answer to math problem. The child will then keep making mistake without knowing why and how to get the right answers.

- Myths and misconceptions:
* One believes that math is for males, females will never do well in math.
* There is only one right way to do math.

How to Prevent?

In view of the importance of math, we should prevent this psychological anxiety from happening to our children and make learning math parts of their life. As parents, we have lots of influence over our children. We can:

1. Give a Positive Attitude - always maintain a positive attitude towards math and give encouragement.

2. Practice - explore opportunity to practice math with them and make it fun.

3. Ask questions - help them in problem solving to ensure she understands.

4. Take a different approach with same concept - get the kid to solve math with different procedure.

5. Allow kids to make mistakes and learn from it.

My phobia for math is not going to get in the way for me to ensure my children will have a fun time learning math.
