Interactive reading games for kids and adopting the right approach to teaching reading can reinforce a beginning reader's enthusiasm. Parents play an important role when children learn to read. Literacy games and reading activities should be part of teaching our children reading.
All parents are eager to teach their children to read. Kids literacy is a vital skill to master as it is an important source of knowledge and pleasure that can last a lifetime. Apart from understanding the benefits, we need to start off with the right approach in sharing the joy of reading. In the early years of the child, parents tend to take the full role and responsibility in teaching reading to our child. As kids enter schools, we need to continue to play a role in filling the gap from the school's systems in reading as no one understands our child better than we do. Based on my personal experience, understand the learning preference of our kids is important to teaching reading. I have a strong visual child but he was struggling with phonics in preschool due to his weak auditory skill. As a parent, I take it my responsibility in helping him to coup with reading. Adopting the Whole Word Approach in teaching him phonics and using interactive reading activities such as "Label of Objects" around the house and flashcard had helped to improve his literacy skill. In addition to playing reading games for kids while we helped them to learn to read, they also need guidance on reading techniques to build their confident in reading. Teaching strategy for reading to children may not be difficult but it goes a long way to nurture a passionate and effective reader in your child. Play is work to preschoolers as this is the best way to engage them in learning. Apart from reading a book to a kid, we can sing nursery rhymes, play phonics games and do many interactive reading activities with them. This set the foundation for the child to his phonemic awareness. For an older child, engaging in fun reading activities such as making book as a project can reinforce a child eagerness in books. The consistent exposure to books together with participation and guidance from parents sends a positive signal to your kid who will form the habit of reading soon.
